On 30 October, the conference "War Crimes, Responsibility and Justice in Ukraine" took place in Berlin.
The event was organized by the Berghof Foundation in cooperation with The Reckoning Project.
Among the main topics, participants also discussed issues and key aspects of transitional justice in Ukraine. Representing IMiP, board member Maksym Yeligulashvili took part in the session "Transitional Justice: Added Value for Accountability and Social Recovery."
Since February 2022, 111,537 war crimes alone have been recorded in Ukraine. This figure does not currently include crimes committed since 2014. Therefore, building a flexible model of transitional justice for Ukraine is extremely important.
Notable points from the event:
- Ukraine has extensive data-driven experience necessary to guide the transitional justice process, both within civil society and at the government level;
- Information sharing is essential in this process. Currently, even among donors and civil society organizations, there is no organized exchange of core information and research, including surveys conducted inside Ukraine. This leads to duplication, competition, and the overlooking of critically important aspects;
- Ukrainian experts and human rights organizations are analyzing how different non-judicial mechanisms could complement, rather than replace, formal judicial processes;
- It is important to define the place and influence of our segments in the overall justice system. This concerns not only restoring infrastructure but also supporting social cohesion and stability in communities and across the country.
