This approach involves creating an accessible and effective alternative to punitive justice by implementing specialized restorative justice programs developed on the basis of extrajudicial methods for resolving criminal conflicts.
IMiP has been implementing restorative programs in Ukraine for over 20 years. Since 2003, in cooperation with the Supreme Court of Ukraine, the Office of the Prosecutor General, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Probation Service and other relevant state agencies and experts, a number of methodologies in the field of restorative justice have been developed and piloted.
Specifically:
- Three-tier Model for Preventing Juvenile Crime (bringing together community resources to prevent juvenile crime)
- Community Center for Restorative Practicesand (an organization or its structural unit tasked with providing organizational support for implementing restorative practices in community conflict prevention)
- Mechanisms for interaction within the mediation community (through a community restorative justice center or another community institution)
We have achieved significant results in this area. Over the past three years, IMiP has developed national mechanisms for applying restorative justice for judges and prosecutors, as well as recommendations on urgent steps toward implementing restorative justice in Ukraine's criminal proceedings.
